A digital artifact is a data trace left by device, app, account, or system activity, such as a log entry, database record, thumbnail, shortcut, or timestamp.

Artifacts often explain user behavior even when a file or message is no longer visible in the normal interface.

Avoid cleanup tools and app reinstallations that can remove artifacts.
